Aire Waves

Leeds Canoe Club Blog. We paddle... lots!
Airewaves used to be Leeds Canoe Club's magazine letting people know what the club was upto. Its quite hard work pulling together a publication letting people know what the club is doing and publishing dates in advance is always hard as things tend to change. Step forth the blog.. Push button publishing for the masses. So here is the idea a few people in the club take it in turns to write up trips and talk about things in the club.

Upper Upper Wharfe

After what seems like months of waiting finally it rains! A tough choice was made between going to the Washburn or going and seeing what actually rivers are actually running. The clocks also changed this weekend which could explain why a few people were late getting to the club house.

We headed off up the Wharfe as it was apparently huge in Otley. Looking at Wharfe at Conistone we decided to head further up stream. We go to Hubberholme and started looking at the river with great delight! It was full, not bank full but certainly runable. We got on and it was flowing fast but the river was very shallow. As we went down stream more and more side becks joined and the river got deeper and wider. The first major drop which needed a bit of inspection was a tounge with a deep slot next to it. I jumped out to put on safety as Paul dropped squarely down the slot. Nick boofed it perfectly while Greg and Silke flew off the tongue with ease. As we paddled down the river a few fimilar faces appeared on the water. Nick Elder and Mark Leeming showed up after already running the river. John Bradshaw and John Lucas appeared and blasted past us.

Once we pasted the pack horse bridge the river eased off alot more. In future we may get off this bridge but it was good to run the section in full. Letting my concentration slip (possibly just taking a photo) I dropped in to a narrow stopper sideways and get flipped. I could get my paddles around the roll so managed to T rescue off the back of Paul's boat. Back at the cars we looked to see what else could be done, but people were faultering after being up early and many people had been playing Polo till late. So we packed up and went to see if Linton Falls was runable. As we parked the cars we could hear the falls behind the houses. Looking over the bridge it was clear that there was a lot of water. Most of it would be runnable, except for the massive munching stopper at the bottom. So we took so pictures, talked a good paddle and went home for a nice cup of tea and to call our Mothers.
