Leeds Canoe Club Blog. We paddle... lots!
Airewaves used to be Leeds Canoe Club's magazine letting people know what the club was upto. Its quite hard work pulling together a publication letting people know what the club is doing and publishing dates in advance is always hard as things tend to change. Step forth the blog.. Push button publishing for the masses. So here is the idea a few people in the club take it in turns to write up trips and talk about things in the club.
Results from saturdays yorkshire division 3 matches were:
Leeds CC 1-6 Leeds Uni (goal from jonny grayson, we should also acknowledge that jonathan dempsey both played and scored for the uni team)
Leeds CC 0-5 Newcastle
Leeds CC 3-0 Glanford 'B' (goal from Dave Kenyon & 2 from jonny grayson)
Leeds CC 1-3 Glanford 'A' (goal from jonny grayson)
Leeds CC 0-2 Malton & Norton

Monday 4th saw Andy , Mark, Steve & Cat take time of work to drive back to the tees with the hope the
that the 2 boats were still there. An early start, but the closing of the a1 delayed us by an hour.
I knew the boats were just down stream of the greta confluence so we walked along the oposite bank to locate the boats - my bright orange boat was easy to spot. we decided the safest approach was to recover them from the bank they were on, so we drove up to abbey bridge and walked in for the 2km. Steve climbed round on the river bank to locate the boats whilst the rest of us climbed down through the wood and using ropes we managed to pull my boat and paddle up to safety. Unfortunately mark's boat wasn't there so we can only assume the river rose over night and washed one of the boats away. We continued searching for a while and mark walked along both sides of the bank but it wasn't found.
So only a semi-successful boat recovery on monday morning.

Sunday 3rd saw 10 people head towards the river Tees to paddle, the barnard castle to winston section. We hoped for little bit of water in the river, but when we arrived at the get in, the tees looked like it could have been an austrian alpine river! Surf waves in the middle of the river at the get in, and abbey rapids tranformed into a giant wave train.
The swim count was 5 out of 9 at abbey rapids, and the boat chases were many.
Having rescued mark's boat about 2km from the abbey rapids, I left mine & his boats on some rocks and climbed up the steep muddy bank to find out where everyone else was. After a while i found simon, paul & gill on the water. they said they were going down stream to find nick who was in the next eddy down from the rescued boat. They told me to walk up to abbey bridge to pass on the car keys i was carrying to those waiting for me as 5 people decided that paddling any further wasn't for them. I agreed and expected them to wait for me where i'd left the boats. I arived at the bridge to find that everyone else had driven off to the get out to find dry clothes leaving me with 2 sets of car keys. So i walked back to the boats, to find the group on the water had disappeared down stream, and struggled to find boats due to them being hidden in an undercut, so having spent ages searching for them I realised it was about to get dark and decided the safest option was to head for abbey bridge as that was the last place anyone knew i was heading for.
On arrival at winston bridge the car group & the paddling group soon realised i was with neither group and that they'd left me behind! they did find me at about 4pm near abbey bridge. As people were still in wet kit (as their dry kit was in my car) & given the wet & dark conditions we decided to leave the boats behind, as getting warm & dry was more important. The end results was 2 boats left overnight on the banks of the tees.
The moral of this story - communication is very important so that everyone knows where everyone is either on or off the water, and so we don't leave people behind!
